Am I a Good Candidate for SMILE Eye Surgery?

Although LASIK is still the most common name in laser eye surgery, more and more people are discovering the benefits of ReLEx SMILE eye surgery. While both offer precise vision correction with excellent results, they may be right for different people. The best way to find out whether any procedure is right for you is always to schedule a consultation with an eye surgeon who can assess the details of your eyes and their needs.

What is ReLEx SMILE Eye Surgery?

Although the full name of this procedure is ReLEx SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction), you will typically see it as just SMILE. This procedure is used to change the shape of your corneas so light can focus properly. It can correct refractive errors, reducing or eliminating your need for contacts or glasses. It uses a laser and a very small incision to minimize recovery time and protect your corneas.

Am I a Good Candidate for SMILE Eye Surgery?

When considering laser eye surgery options, many factors can affect which procedure is right for you. Your eye surgeon will consider:

Your Prescription

SMILE can correct a broad range of refractive errors, but some people have prescriptions that it cannot treat. It treats nearsightedness and astigmatism but will not correct farsightedness. There may also be prescriptions that are too strong for this method of treatment.

Dry Eye Problems

Because SMILE makes a much smaller incision in the cornea than LASIK, it may be a better option for you if you have problems with dry eyes. SMILE minimizes disruption of the corneas, making it less likely to worsen these issues. You may have other eye health concerns that affect your eligibility for SMILE or laser eye surgery in general.

Your Lifestyle

People who enjoy contact sports are often recommended for SMILE eye surgery. The incision used to perform this procedure is 2-3mm long. As a result, it does not create the same risk as LASIK, which is that the larger corneal flap could dislodge.

What Happens During SMILE Eye Surgery?

Your eyes are numbed for the procedure, preventing any discomfort. The entire procedure takes about 20 minutes. Your eye surgeon uses the computer-guided laser to make the small incision, then removes extremely thin layers of corneal tissue until the required shape is achieved. This incision heals by itself, leaving your corneas with minimal disturbance.

What is Recovery Like After SMILE Eye Surgery?

You may experience some minor irritation, blurring, and sensitivity in the first few days after your procedure. Most people return to work and other activities within one to two days. Use your eye drops as prescribed and attend follow-up appointments to help ensure a smooth recovery. Your vision will continue to evolve and adjust for a few weeks.
