Am I Too Young for LASIK? What Age Is Best for Laser Eye Surgery?

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, laser eye surgery may sound like the perfect solution. However, age plays an important role in determining whether it’s the right option for you.

While LASIK is widely performed, it’s not recommended for everyone, especially younger individuals whose vision may still be changing. Understanding the ideal age and conditions for LASIK can help you determine the right time to take the next step toward visual freedom.

What is LASIK Laser Eye Surgery?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a vision correction procedure that reshapes the cornea to improve how light is focused onto the retina. It is commonly used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During the procedure, a thin flap is created on the cornea, and an excimer laser precisely removes microscopic layers of tissue to improve visual clarity.

LASIK is quick, typically taking less than 30 minutes, and recovery is usually fast. Many people experience significantly improved vision within 24 hours of their procedure. It’s a long-term solution that can reduce or eliminate the need for corrective eyewear.

Am I Too Young for LASIK? What Age Is Best for Laser Eye Surgery?

The minimum age for LASIK is 18. However, your eye surgeon may recommend waiting until your early to mid-20s when your prescription has stabilized for at least one to two years. This ensures the best possible outcome and reduces the risk of future vision changes.

Your eyes go through natural changes during childhood and adolescence, and some people continue to experience prescription shifts into their early 20s. Having LASIK too early could result in the need for enhancement procedures later on.

Your eye surgeon will also consider your overall eye health, corneal thickness, and the stability of your vision history. Some people may have relatively stable vision at 18 and make good candidates for LASIK.

There is no strict upper age limit for LASIK, but people in their 40s and beyond may develop presbyopia, a condition that affects near vision. In those cases, other treatments like Custom Lens Replacement (also known as refractive lens exchange) or PRESBYOND® might be a better choice.

Will I Feel Anything During LASIK?

LASIK is not painful. Before the procedure, your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic drops to ensure your comfort. You may feel some mild pressure during the creation of the corneal flap, but this lasts only a few seconds. Most people report that LASIK was easier and more comfortable than they expected.

How Soon Can I Drive After Getting LASIK?

It’s essential to have someone drive you home on the day of the procedure, as your vision will be blurry for several hours. Most people are cleared to drive one to two days after LASIK.

Dry eyes are the most common side effect of LASIK, but they will resolve over the next few days. People with chronic dry eye issues may be recommended for a different procedure. Other common, temporary effects include glare around lights and minor irritation or sensitivity.

You’ll receive specific guidelines from your provider about when to resume driving and other daily activities. Everyone heals at a slightly different pace, so follow-up care is important.

How Well Will I See After LASIK?

Many patients achieve 20/20 vision or better after LASIK, although individual results can vary. The goal is to dramatically reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contacts. Your results will depend on the degree of your refractive error, the thickness of your corneas, and your overall eye health.

Most people notice improved vision within a day, and it continues to stabilize over the next few weeks. While LASIK offers long-lasting results, it doesn’t prevent age-related changes like presbyopia or cataracts, which may require future treatment.
