Can I Get 20/20 Vision with Laser Eye Surgery?

If glasses, contacts, or blurry vision affect your ability to enjoy life in every way possible, laser eye surgery can give you the freedom you have been looking for. Many people considering these procedures wonder if they will have 20/20 vision afterward. The answer varies depending on many factors, but you can expect significant improvements!

What is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a procedure that corrects refractive errors like astigmatism, farsightedness, or nearsightedness. While LASIK is the most familiar type, alternatives such as PRK and SMILE also offer excellent results. These procedures all correct your blurry vision by changing the shape of your cornea, a structure involved in focusing light.

How Does Laser Eye Surgery Work?

Each form of laser eye surgery works a bit differently. However, they all use the same type of computer-guided laser to change your corneas, so they focus light correctly. LASIK works by making a flap in the epithelium (clear outer layer) of the cornea and replacing it afterward. SMILE uses a much smaller incision, making it more suitable for some people. PRK removes the epithelium and allows it to grow back, making it better for people with certain corneal problems.

Can I Get 20/20 Vision With Laser Eye Surgery?

How much improvement you can expect to see is one of the most common questions when considering laser eye surgery. Some people think that 20/20 vision means that you have perfect or excellent eyesight. However, 20/20 vision actually means that at 20 feet from an eye chart, you can see what another person with normal vision would see at 20 feet. It is not a perfect way to measure the overall quality of your eyesight.

Laser eye surgery will provide 20/20 vision for many people, but not everyone. About 90% of people who have LASIK with our skilled eye surgeon will achieve this level of correction. During your consultation, we will discuss factors that may affect your results, including the severity of your refractive error.
People who do not achieve 20/20 vision with laser eye surgery are often still very happy with their results. They often find that they have a reduced need for corrective lenses or may only need them under some circumstances. However, each person experiences unique results.

Am I a Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

While laser eye surgery is a popular method of vision correction, it may not be ideal for everyone. You might be a good candidate if:

  • You have healthy eyes without conditions such as glaucoma
  • You have a type of vision problem that laser eye surgery can correct
  • You have realistic expectations about your results

Other factors will help determine which type of laser eye surgery we may recommend. For example, PRK is often recommended for people with thin or abnormal corneas who cannot have LASIK. Your consultation and exam will allow your eye surgeon to make the best recommendations for your needs.
