How Does LipiFlow® Work?

Occasional eye irritation from allergies, dry air, and other factors can bother all of us at times. For some people, though, chronic dry eye symptoms can interfere with their daily lives. If you have sensitive, burning, or irritated eyes, LipiFlow® dry eye treatment gives you long-lasting relief without discomfort or downtime.

What is LipiFlow® Dry Eye Treatment?

While dry eye symptoms can have many causes, almost 90% of cases are caused by a condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). Although tears seem simple, they are actually composed of three layers, including a lipid or oil layer that keeps them from drying out too fast. LipiFlow® treats MGD to restore this lipid layer and help your tears work properly.

How Does LipiFlow® Work?

LipiFlow® treats the Meibomian glands, which are found along the edges of your eyelids. These glands can become blocked, leading to dry eye symptoms. During LipiFlow®, a single-use applicator uses a gentle combination of warmth and pressure to break up the blockages and clear the glands. Treatment takes as little as 15 to 20 minutes, and you will feel the warmth and massage-like pressure on your eyelids but no discomfort.

When Will I See Results After LipiFlow®?

Most people only need a single LipiFlow® treatment to treat their MGD. After being blocked, though, your glands can take time to resume their normal function. Most people start to see results in four to six weeks, noticing that their eyes feel less irritated and that they have less need for eye drops. Some people may no longer need other dry eye treatments after LipiFlow®.

How Long Do LipiFlow® Results Last?

Each person’s MGD is different, so how long your LipiFlow® results last depends on many factors. If your glands secrete a lot of oil and tend to become blocked frequently, you may need treatments more often, while others might need fewer sessions. While some individuals return for occasional follow-up sessions when their symptoms return, others schedule maintenance treatments as needed to keep their eyes healthy.

Am I a Good Candidate for LipiFlow®?

Your eye surgeon will perform a thorough examination to determine the causes of your dry eye before recommending treatment since not all cases of dry eye are caused by MGD. If these glands are the root of your problem, you are most likely a good candidate for LipiFlow®.

Good candidates should have reasonable expectations and overall healthy eyes, although not all conditions will disqualify them. LipiFlow® is a quick, noninvasive treatment with excellent results for most people. If MGD is not the cause of your dry eye symptoms, we offer a wide range of other treatment options to help you find relief.
