How Much is Laser Eye Surgery?

If you are considering a vision correction procedure, there are many factors you should take into account. While cost certainly plays a role, the vast majority of people who have laser eye surgery are thrilled with their results and feel strongly that their clear vision was worth the cost. Along with saving money on corrective lenses, these procedures can provide you with priceless freedom.

What is Laser Eye Surgery?

If you are farsighted, nearsighted, or have astigmatism, one of the most effective ways to correct your vision is by using a laser. Light entering your eye passes through clear structures called your lens and cornea, and both of them bend the light so it focuses for a clear image. Laser eye surgery removes thin layers of your cornea until it has the correct shape to give you better vision.

How Much is Laser Eye Surgery?

Comparing the cost of laser eye surgery may not be as straightforward as it seems. When looking at the price, you should consider:

  • The type of laser eye surgery
  • The average price for that type of laser eye surgery in your area
  • The skill and experience of your provider

Pricing is usually provided per eye. Having LASIK or a similar procedure is an investment in your vision, and saving money should not be your goal. Instead, find an experienced eye surgeon you feel comfortable with. During your consultation, Dr. Senekal will discuss all the factors that affect your cost and provide you with an accurate estimate.

Which Type of Laser Eye Surgery is Right For Me?

While LASIK is the best-known form of laser eye surgery, you have several other options. Each type offers different benefits

LASIK

This procedure works by creating a flap on the surface of the cornea and then reshaping the inside layers with a laser. It can treat a wide range of prescriptions and is suitable for many people, but not everyone.

SMILE

This procedure uses a much smaller incision, so it disrupts less of the cornea. This makes it ideal for some people who should not have LASIK. It can treat nearsightedness and astigmatism.

PRK

This procedure removes the outer layer of the cornea, which grows back completely after the procedure. It has a longer recovery time but provides an option for many people who should not have other types of laser eye surgery.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

Only a consultation can determine whether you are a candidate for laser eye surgery and which type may be right for you. Factors your eye surgeon will consider include:

  • Your overall eye health
  • The thickness and stability of your corneas
  • Your history of dry eye or similar conditions
  • Lifestyle factors, including contact sports
  • Your type and severity of refractive error

People who are not good candidates for laser eye surgery can often benefit from other procedures. Dr. Senekal will provide you with all your options and the benefits of each one.
