LASIK vs. Reading Glasses: A Long-Term Solution to Presbyopia?

As we age, many of us notice that reading a book, checking a phone screen, or looking at a menu in dim light becomes more difficult. This common condition is called presbyopia, and for years, the go-to solution has been reading glasses. While glasses offer temporary help, they can become frustrating to manage.

If you’re seeking a more permanent option, laser eye surgery may provide the freedom you want. At Visionmax Eye Centre, we offer advanced solutions that go beyond LASIK to address presbyopia with precision and long-term results.

What is Presbyopia and Do I Have It?

Presbyopia is the age-related loss of the eye’s ability to focus on nearby objects. It usually begins in your early to mid-40s and continues to progress with age. Unlike other refractive errors like nearsightedness or astigmatism, presbyopia is caused by a stiffening of the eye’s natural lens, which reduces its ability to shift focus.

Common signs of presbyopia include:

  • Difficulty reading small print
  • Needing to hold reading material farther away
  • Eye strain or fatigue when using digital devices
  • Frequent switching between different pairs of glasses

If you are over 40 and experiencing any of these symptoms, presbyopia is likely the cause.

LASIK vs. Reading Glasses: A Long-Term Solution to Presbyopia?

Reading glasses are a quick and simple fix, but they do not address the root cause of presbyopia. Many people find them inconvenient for day-to-day tasks, especially when switching between near and distance vision. Glasses can also interfere with physical activities or work environments.

LASIK has long been used to correct distance vision, but conventional LASIK does not treat presbyopia effectively. However, an advanced form of LASIK called PRESBYOND® is specifically designed to correct both near and distance vision in one procedure.

What is PRESBYOND® Laser Eye Surgery?

PRESBYOND® is a specialized form of laser eye surgery that addresses presbyopia by creating what’s known as “Laser Blended Vision.”

This technique modifies one eye for distance vision and the other for near vision, but unlike traditional monovision, it uses a customized laser profile to create a smooth transition between both visual zones. The result is a more natural and seamless focus across all distances.

PRESBYOND® is performed using wavefront-optimized technology and detailed mapping of your corneal shape and eye optics. At Visionmax, we use advanced ZEISS laser systems for precise and personalized treatment.

Most patients adapt quickly to the blended vision effect and enjoy reading, using digital devices, and driving without needing glasses.

Am I a Good Candidate for Presbyopia Treatment?

You may be a good candidate for PRESBYOND® if:

  • You are over 40 and experiencing difficulty with near vision
  • Your distance vision is currently good or correctable
  • You do not have advanced cataracts or other serious eye conditions
  • Your prescription has remained stable for at least a year
  • You are not pregnant or nursing
  • You are motivated to reduce or eliminate your dependence on reading glasses

Some patients may need a short adaptation period after surgery as the brain adjusts to blended vision. Your Visionmax surgeon will guide you through every step and help determine if PRESBYOND® is right for you.

What are My Other Presbyopia Treatment Options?

If PRESBYOND® is not ideal for your eyes, other options are available.

Custom Lens Replacement

Also known as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), this procedure replaces the natural lens with a premium intraocular lens (IOL) that provides multifocal or extended depth of focus.

This is often the best option for people with early cataracts or those who want a permanent solution that also prevents cataract formation.

Custom Lens Replacement is especially useful for people in their late 40s or older who are no longer good candidates for laser vision correction due to lens aging. It offers excellent vision at multiple distances without the daily reliance on reading glasses.
