PRK XTRA: How It Strengthens Your Vision After Surgery

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) has long been a trusted vision correction procedure, offering an effective alternative to LASIK for individuals with thin corneas or other contraindications. PRK XTRA enhances this procedure by incorporating accelerated corneal cross-linking to further strengthen the cornea and improve long-term results.

What is PRK?

PRK is a laser eye surgery that reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, PRK does not involve creating a corneal flap. Instead, the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is gently removed, and an excimer laser shapes the underlying corneal tissue to improve how light is focused on the retina. The epithelium naturally regenerates within a few days after surgery.

PRK is an excellent option for those with thin corneas, irregular corneal surfaces, or lifestyles that put them at risk for flap complications, such as contact sports or physically demanding professions.

PRK XTRA: How It Strengthens Your Vision After Surgery

PRK XTRA enhances standard PRK by adding an accelerated corneal cross-linking (CXL) procedure. This technique involves applying Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) to the cornea, allowing it to hydrate the tissue for approximately 90 seconds. Then, ultraviolet (UV) light is applied for another 90 seconds, triggering a biochemical reaction that strengthens the collagen fibers in the cornea.

This additional step stabilizes the cornea by increasing its biomechanical strength, reducing the risk of corneal ectasia (a progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea). PRK XTRA is particularly beneficial for patients with thinner or more structurally fragile corneas who might otherwise be at a higher risk for complications.

By reinforcing the cornea, PRK XTRA can enhance the long-term stability of vision correction, providing clearer and more reliable results after surgery.

What Does PRK XTRA Treat?

PRK XTRA is primarily used to correct refractive errors such as:

Nearsightedness (myopia): Improves distance vision by reshaping the cornea to reduce excessive curvature.

Farsightedness (hyperopia): Adjusts the cornea to focus light more accurately on the retina.

Astigmatism: Smooths out irregularities in the cornea to enhance overall vision clarity.

Corneal Instability: PRK XTRA is particularly beneficial for individuals with thin or at-risk corneas, offering additional structural support to minimize the likelihood of complications like ectasia.

By combining vision correction with cross-linking, PRK XTRA can offer improved outcomes for patients who may not have been ideal candidates for traditional PRK or LASIK.

What is Recovery Like After PRK XTRA?

Recovery after PRK XTRA is similar to that of traditional PRK, with a few key considerations:

Initial Discomfort: The first few days following surgery may involve mild discomfort, light sensitivity, and blurred vision as the epithelium regenerates.

Healing Time: While the surface of the eye heals within a few days, vision continues to improve over several weeks as the cornea stabilizes.

Follow-Up Care: Patients will need to use medicated eye drops and attend follow-up appointments to monitor healing and ensure optimal results.

Long-Term Benefits: The addition of accelerated cross-linking enhances the stability of vision correction, reducing the chances of regression and improving long-term visual clarity.

  • Amazing. Staff were very nice and explained everything so well. Communication via e-mails/phone for my questions leading up to surgery was great. All staff were amazing the day of, so nice and kept me calm and relaxed the entire time. And I could not be happier with the outcome!
