Vision Correction Procedures to Ask Your Eye Surgeon About
Many people who wear glasses or contact lenses have questions about their other options. An eye surgeon can perform several types of vision correction procedures that can give you clearer vision. While each has different advantages, all are safe and effective, and most have minimal recovery time. Your consultation is the first step in determining which one might be best for you.
What are Vision Correction Procedures?
Vision correction procedures usually address one of the two structures your eyes use to focus light. The first is the cornea, a clear structure that forms the front of your eye, and the second is the lens that rests behind the colored part of the eye. As light travels through these structures, they cause it to focus. When things work well, the light falls on the retina and forms an image. When the focus is off, the image becomes blurry. Vision correction procedures correct this focus so you can see clearly.

Laser Eye Surgery
When most people think of vision correction procedures, they often think of LASIK. However, there are several types of laser eye surgery. All of them work by reshaping your cornea to achieve correct focus.
LASIK – uses a flap in the surface of the cornea to access the middle layers
SMILE – removes a disc of corneal tissue using a small incision
PRK – removes the surface of the cornea, which grows back intact
PRESBYOND® – performed like LASIK but treats presbyopia
Several factors affect which procedure may be recommended for you. SMILE or PRK may be more suitable than LASIK for people with abnormally shaped or thin corneas or other eye conditions, such as dry eyes. PRESBYOND® treats presbyopia, an age-related change that causes difficulty seeing things up close.

EVO ICL™
Whether you are not a candidate for laser eye surgery or looking for an advanced alternative, EVO ICL™ might be the answer. Sometimes referred to as an implantable contact lens, this biocompatible lens is placed over your natural one, adding a third layer of focus that gives you clear vision. Downtime is minimal, and you may see better almost immediately.
Refractive Lens Exchange
Individuals over 40 will usually develop presbyopia, which occurs as their lenses lose flexibility with age. Most people eventually develop cataracts, an age-related clouding of their lenses. Refractive lens exchange (RLE) uses a corrective artificial lens to replace the natural one. This new lens improves their vision and will never develop age-related changes.
