How Long Does LASIK Last?

Millions of people have discovered better eyesight with laser vision correction. If you need glasses or contacts, you might be a candidate for LASIK. This form of vision correction uses minimally invasive technology to reshape your cornea for effective, long-lasting results.

What is LASIK?

LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses. It adjusts the shape of your cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Your cornea, the clear structure at the front of your eye, helps change the angle of incoming light. The laser shapes the cornea, so the light reaches the retina at the correct angle and forms a clear image.

How Does LASIK Work?

Dr. Senekal begins the LASIK procedure with the Visumax Femtosecond laser. This laser creates a thin flap in the outer layer of the cornea. This flap is lifted without detaching it. The MEL90 Excimer laser will vaporize microscopic layers of the cornea for precise vision correction. This process causes no heat or discomfort and only takes seconds per eye. The flap is returned to its location, where it will quickly heal.

How Long Does LASIK Last?

Each person’s LASIK experience is unique. Some people might be satisfied with their results for life, while others may have LASIK or another type of vision correction years later. LASIK permanently changes the shape of the cornea, producing lasting results. Most people report satisfaction with their LASIK results after ten years or more

However, your eyes will continue to change with age. Your lens will become less flexible over time, and many people who have LASIK will eventually still need reading glasses. Your original vision issue can continue progressing, although your vision will remain better than it would be without LASIK.

What are the Benefits of LASIK?
