How Much Does Laser Vision Correction Cost?

Millions of people enjoy better vision thanks to laser vision correction. These procedures can improve your quality of life and let you enjoy more moments clearly. You may be concerned about the cost of laser vision correction, but you might find you will save money in the long term.

What is Laser Vision Correction?

Refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism occur when light does not focus properly on the retina at the back of the eye. The result is a blurred image. Laser vision correction reshapes the cornea, the clear layer at the front of the eye. It changes the angle of light entering your eye, resulting in sharper vision.

How Much Does Laser Vision Correction Cost?

Costs for laser vision correction vary depending on factors such as:

  • Your provider
  • Your location
  • The type of laser vision correction
  • Post-procedure items like eye drops

Each provider will have its pricing for each type of procedure. Dr. Senekal will be happy to review your expected cost during your consultation. Keep in mind that the skill and experience of your eye surgeon will play a powerful role in the results you experience.

Types of Laser Vision Correction

Laser vision correction comes in three types. All three are highly effective in correcting your vision. Dr. Senekal will perform a thorough examination to determine which one will work best for you.

PRK

PRK begins by removing the epithelium (outer layer) of the cornea. This opening lets your eye surgeon shape the cornea with a laser. PRK has a longer recovery time than other types, but it is the best option for some people, especially those with thin corneas.

LASIK

LASIK uses a laser to create a flap in the cornea’s outer layer. After lifting the flap away, your eye surgeon uses another laser to change the shape of the cornea, one microscopic layer at a time. The flap heals quickly, letting you resume activities within a day or two.

SMILE

SMILE uses a laser that creates a small disc of corneal tissue underneath the epidermis of the cornea. This disc is removed through a tiny incision. SMILE causes minimal disruption of the cornea, allowing a fast recovery and less risk of dry eye or other issues.

Is There Any Downtime With Laser Vision Correction?

Recovery from laser vision correction depends on the procedure. PRK requires the longest recovery time. Your corneal epithelium will regenerate to protect your eye within a few days. LASIK and SMILE generally allow you to return to most activities within 24 to 48 hours.
