What is ReLEx SMILE?

ReLEx SMILE, more commonly known as SMILE, is a vision correction procedure. It uses an advanced femtosecond laser to reshape your cornea. The cornea, a clear structure at the front of the eye, changes how incoming light focuses on the retina. Changing the shape of the cornea corrects refractive errors that occur when light does not focus properly. Each type of laser eye surgery approaches this procedure in a different way. 

How Does SMILE Laser Eye Surgery Work?

Like the more well-known LASIK, SMILE uses a femtosecond laser for vision correction. The procedure works by using the laser to create a disc of corneal tissue underneath the surface. The laser then makes a two to three-millimeter incision and removes the disc. This incision is significantly smaller than the one used by LASIK, making it a better choice for some people. The corneal tissue removed by SMILE leaves your cornea with a shape that focuses light correctly. The incision heals rapidly without sutures. 

What is Recovery Like After ReLEx SMILE?

SMILE allows a very rapid recovery. Most people can return to their usual activities within a day or two. You may experience irritation, blurry vision, or a burning sensation after your procedure, but we will provide eye drops that manage these effects. Most people are back to work and can see clearly within three or four days. The small SMILE incision allows you to heal quickly and return to your daily routine. 

What Results Will I See After SMILE Eye Surgery?

SMILE provides excellent results for many people, even some who are not good candidates for LASIK. Over 97% of those who have SMILE with Dr. Senekal will achieve 20/20 vision. Am I a Good Candidate for SMILE Laser Eye Surgery?

Most adults with healthy eyes make good candidates for ReLEx SMILE. Ideal candidates have reasonable expectations and no health issues that would affect the procedure. People who should not have LASIK due to chronic dry eye or other conditions may still be good candidates for SMILE. It also makes a good choice for those who engage in contact sports.
