Who is a Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

Thanks to laser eye surgery, many people who used to wear glasses or contacts no longer need them. Are you a candidate for vision correction with one of these procedures? Most people can have laser vision correction, but you will need to meet some specific criteria.

What is Laser Eye Surgery?

If you are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism, you have a refractive error. The light that enters the eye does not focus on the retina, leading to blurry vision at certain distances. Reshaping the cornea, the dome that covers and protects the eye’s surface, can change the angle of light so your vision becomes clear. Laser eye surgery uses a laser to reshape the cornea with a precision that gives many people 20/20 vision after treatment.

Who is a Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser vision correction has been performed on millions of people, and you may also make a good candidate. Dr. Teliani will examine your vision and eye health to determine if you are a suitable candidate and which procedure best suits you. You may be a good candidate if:

  • You have no serious medical eye conditions
  • You do not have any active infections
  • You are eighteen or older
  • You have had a reasonably stable prescription for the past year
  • You have a healthy cornea
  • You have reasonable expectations about your results
  • Your prescription is within the range treatable with laser eye surgery

Most adults with healthy eyes make good candidates for at least one type of laser eye surgery. For example, if you have thin corneas, you may not make a good candidate for SMILE or LASIK, but PRK may still be an option. You should understand that you still may need glasses under certain circumstances, such as reading glasses as you age.

How Does Laser Eye Surgery Work?

Each type of laser eye surgery uses a laser for corneal reshaping. They use different techniques for reaching the cornea to reshape it.

This procedure removes the epithelium or outer layer of the cornea using a laser. The surgeon corrects the shape of the cornea, then covers the eye with a contact lens bandage. The epithelium will start to regrow almost immediately and heal completely in a few weeks.

During LASIK, your surgeon uses a laser to create a flap in the cornea. The flap remains connected but can be lifted to reach the underlying layers of the cornea. After reshaping the cornea, your surgeon replaces the flap.

During a SMILE procedure, your surgeon uses a laser that creates a disc of corneal tissue, then removes it through a small opening. This method eliminates some of the concerns with the flap used in LASIK.
