What Does Laser Eye Surgery Do?

Laser eye surgery can dramatically improve your vision, helping you see clearly. These procedures change the angle of light entering the eye, correcting conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. At Visionmax Eye Centre, we use the most advanced laser technology for optimal results.

What is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a type of vision correction that uses a laser to reshape the cornea. The cornea, the clear structure at the front of the eye, adjusts the angle of light as it enters. When the light does not travel at the correct angle, the resulting images look blurry. Laser eye surgery precisely removes layers of the cornea to achieve the desired shape.

What Does Laser Eye Surgery Do?

At Visionmax Eye Centre we use an advanced excimer laser to reshape the cornea. This laser removes one microscopically thin layer at a time to provide precise correction customized to your vision concerns.

This correction leads to clearer vision and less blurriness. Each type of laser eye surgery works differently. Dr. Senekal will determine which procedure will give you the best results.

Which Type of Laser Eye Surgery is Right for Me?

Only a thorough eye examination can determine which laser eye surgery is best for you. Certain eye conditions, the shape of your eye, and the type of correction you need can affect which procedure Dr. Senekal recommends.

LASIK

During LASIK, a femtosecond laser creates a flap in the outer layers of the cornea. This flap is lifted away, allowing the excimer laser to perform corneal reshaping. The flap requires no incisions and heals quickly, resulting in minimal downtime.

SMILE

This procedure uses a laser to create a disc of corneal tissue underneath the surface. The surgeon uses a laser to make a small incision and remove the disc. SMILE is the least invasive type of laser eye surgery. It is suitable for many people, including those with dry eyes and people who engage in contact sports.

PRK

This procedure removes the epithelium, the outermost layer of the cornea. The surgeon then uses the excimer laser to adjust the shape of the cornea. PRK may be recommended for those with thin corneas, among others.

What is Recovery Like After Laser Eye Surgery?

Recovery is different for each type of eye surgery. PRK has the longest recovery time, and it can take a few weeks to see clearly. SMILE and LASIK allow most people to resume their normal activities in 24 to 48 hours. Follow Dr. Senekal’s post-procedure instructions, including the proper use of eye drops.

I absolutely loved my experience with VisionMax. They have the most incredible staff, from start to finish they were so helpful and informative! I was nervous and Dr.Senekal talked me through the whole procedure, making me feel so comforted. It was over before I knew it (quite literally)! I cannot recommend going to VisionMax enough!
