What to Expect After LASIK

If you have researched vision correction, you have probably encountered LASIK. This procedure uses lasers to improve your vision by reshaping your cornea. People considering LASIK often have questions about what to expect afterward. Dr. Senekal will address any questions you have and put your mind at ease.

What is LASIK?

LASIK is a type of laser eye surgery. It stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. This procedure works on your cornea, a clear structure at the front of your eye that helps focus light. When light hits the retina at the proper angle, you see clearly. LASIK adjusts the angle of incoming light to correct vision problems.

How Does LASIK Work?

Dr. Senekal begins the LASIK procedure by using a femtosecond laser to create a flap in the outer layer of the cornea. An excimer laser will use this opening to remove microscopic layers of the cornea until it achieves the desired shape. The flap is put back into place, and the edges will begin to heal within 24 to 48 hours. You will not need sutures, and the procedure takes ten to fifteen minutes.

What to Expect After LASIK

You can usually expect a smooth recovery after LASIK, especially if you follow Dr. Senekal’s instructions. You may experience some irritation, but eye drops will help manage it. Most people can drive after one day and return to work within three days. Your vision will continue to adjust over the next few weeks to months as the flap heals.

Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK?

LASIK is minimally invasive, and many people are good candidates. Ideal candidates for LASIK:

  • Have healthy eyes
  • Have normal corneas
  • Do not have a history of dry eye
  • Want to see significant vision improvements
  • Have had stable vision for over a year
  • Have reasonable expectations

Dr. Senekal will decide whether you are a candidate after an examination and assessment. He may determine that you are a better candidate for a different procedure. Good LASIK candidates understand that the level of vision correction varies from person to person.

What Results Will I See After LASIK?

LASIK results will vary, but Dr. Senekal has the skill to achieve consistent excellence. Over 90% of his LASIK patients achieve 20//20 vision, and almost 98% achieve vision within their target range. The vast majority of people feel highly satisfied with their vision after the procedure.

LASIK results are long-lasting, however, your eyes will undergo normal age-related changes over time. If you have already developed some of these age-related changes, Dr. Senekal may recommend a different procedure.

I absolutely loved my experience with VisionMax. They have the most incredible staff, from start to finish they were so helpful and informative! I was nervous and Dr.Senekal talked me through the whole procedure, making me feel so comforted. It was over before I knew it (quite literally)! I cannot recommend going to VisionMax enough!
