What Causes Dry Eye?

Meibomian glands are found along the edges of the eyelids, and they secrete a lipid that forms a vital component of your tears. Without functional Meibomian glands, your tears evaporate too fast, leading to dry eye. MGD occurs when the glands become blocked and cannot produce the lipid.
What is LipiFlow® Dry Eye Treatment?
LipiFlow® is a gentle, non-invasive way to unblock the Meibomian glands. It uses warmth and massaging pulses to clear oil and debris from the glands. Once unblocked, they will resume their job, helping make functional tears that keep your eyes comfortable and lubricated.
Each LipiFlow® treatment uses a specially designed single-use applicator that gently heats and applies pulses of pressure to the glands. LipiFlow® does not use any drugs, and it can decrease or eliminate the need for eye drops. Treatment typically takes ten to fifteen minutes and requires no downtime.
How to Prepare for LipiFlow® Dry Eye Treatment
Since LipiFlow® is quick and non-invasive, you will not need to prepare in any particular way. You may want to avoid hard-to-remove long-wear makeup the day before treatment. We will ask you to arrive with a clean face, especially the eye area. Skip your morning eye treatments, so your skin is as clear as possible. Follow any specific instructions you receive about your eye medications.
What Does LipiFlow® Treatment Feel Like?
LipiFlow® is pain-free and comfortable. You may feel a gentle warmth and pressure, but this should not cause discomfort. You will not need any numbing, and you can see normally as soon as treatment ends. You can return to your usual activities immediately, including work and driving.

What Results Will I See With LipiFlow®?
LipiFlow® results typically become noticeable a few weeks after your treatment session. You will notice your eyes feel more comfortable, less irritated, and more lubricated. Results will last longer for some people than others, depending on how often your glands become clogged. If they do, another quick fifteen-minute treatment can unblock them again.
Am I a Candidate for LipiFlow® Dry Eye Treatment?
You may be a good candidate for LipiFlow® if you have dry eye caused by MGD. We will discuss other treatment options if you have a different dry eye cause. Good candidates for LipiFlow® should not have an eye infection at the time of treatment.
